Back to Catalog Index Quick Change Tapered Toolholders Quick-change tapered toolholders are designed and built to increase product quality by accurately positioning cutting tools on production and non-production machines. They feature improved cutting tool centerline accuracy, positive drive ofthe cutting tool and thru-coolant capability. Each patented tapered toolholder also features a compact design which minimizes spindle to spindle center distance as well as overhang from the bearing diameters to the spindle end, mak ing the system ideal for single and mUltiple spindle stub drilling applications without the use of costly bushing plates. Six separate body sizes are available to accommodate a wide variety of tool shank diameters beginning at V16-inch (1.5mm) diameter. Each tapered tool holder assembly features a guaranteed accuracy of 0.0005 T.I.R. runout 2-in. from the collet face measured by a zero spindle and class XX gage pin. Special holders, such as extended lengths and solid soft blank nosepieces for cutter inserts, can also be designed and manufactured to customer specifications. Quick Change Tapholders 51 Series quick change tapholders are especially designed for applications in which machine feed does not exactly match that produced by t he tap pitch . Parallel float compensates for misal ignment conditions between the hole to be tapped and the machine spindle. 51 Series tapholders offer: • Quick chang e- a finger operated sleeve enab les fast tool change to reduce machine downtime. • Close center tooling- the sma ll overall toolhold er diameter allows too ling on close center distances. • Sensitive pressure compensation-a compression spring neutralizes feed rate variations to ensure that ideal pressure is applied to the tool at the beginning of the cut. • Built-in protection-if the drilling operation has been omitted, tool holders collapse within themselves to prevent tool breakage. All tapholder models are available w ith or without compression and tension features. Hydraulic Chucks Hydraulic expansion chucks guarantee a maximum runout of 0.00012-inches at two times the tool shank diameter. This provides a balanced chip load and increased part quality. Reduced wear pro longs tool life as much as 300 percent. Hydraulic expansion chucks can be operated at very high speeds. Additional balancing is recommended for speeds above 15,000 RPM. The special resilient sleeve design enab les hydraulic expansion chucks to clamp cylindrica l shanks up to 1.250-i nch diameter and Weldon flats shanks up to 0.75-inch. The slimmer design of all hydrau lic chucks permits operation in difficult working situations. Interchangeabl e collet types can be inserted with variable shank diameters using one hydrauli c expansion chuck. The radial runout ofthese hydraulic chucks with collets is less than 0.0002-inch. The complete line of hydraulic chucks incl udes CAT, BT, HSK and flange-mounted models. Each chuck style is available with thru -coolant capacity. Quick-Change Straight ShankToolholders Straight shank tool holders and automotive collettype holders can be used in existing automotive spindles with over-the-spindle adapters to transform any spindle, regardless of original manufacturer, into a qu ick-change design . Benefits of the system include increased machining efficiency, high accuracy repeatability and quick-change ability . Each straight shank toolholder assembly includes a body, collet, collet nut and snap ring, positive drive and preset screw assembly as well as a rubber washer for thru -coolant applications. In operation, the tool holder is locked into the spindle by rotating the spind le mounted collar against the Acme left hand thread on the tool holder body. Three different body sizes are available in each model to accommodate tools ranging from 7/ 64 (2 .7788 mm) to 3J4-inch (19.0500 mm) in diameter. Each straight shank holder series features a guaranteed accuracy within 0.001 T.I.R. runout 2-inches from the collet face . This is measured by a zero spindle and a class XX gage pin. Over.:rhe-Spindle Adapter AsselDblies Over-the-spindle adapters transform standard high production machine spindles into quick-change adjustable tool adapters. They can be used with straight shank holders, automotive collet type holders or existing automotive shank tool holders by using a standard spindle collar and adapter nut assembly. Located directly onto the spindle outside diameter and securely fastened by a locking set screw, the over-thespindle adapter assemblies feature a left-hand threaded collar that forces an Acme left hand threaded adapter nut to seat directly against the spindle fa ce. This enables the sp indle to take the thrust generated by the tool, el im inating any thrust being directed to the set screw . When loosened, the mechanically activated over-the -spindle adapter (standard or stub model) forces chips away from the spindle face . Details are hardened and ground for consistent accuracy and are available to f it every machine builder's standard spindles. Collets Precision collets feature a single angle design D .D. with a ground and lapped I.D. manufactured to within 0.0001inches ofthe required tool shank diameter. A single split through the collet allows tool clamping without losing accuarcy, unlike other collets with mul tiple splits which lose accuracy while allowing wider tool shank ranges. Six individual col let sizes are available to accommodate tools ranging from 1/16inch to Pis-inches in diameter. These collets can be used in conjunction with tapered and stra ight shank tool holders or w ith other tool holder designs where clamping accuracy is essential. This toolholder is available in four separate sizes to accommodate tool shank sizes of V4, 5/16, 3/8, 7/16, V2, 9/16, 5/8 , 1V16 and 3f4-inches. The basic construction of the holder assembly includes a Jacobs type beveled tooth nosepiece, a precision tapered collet and nut assembly that securely clamps and unclamps the tool from the holder and an internal flat that provides positive drive for the tool. Each tool holder also features thru-coolant capability and radial positioning for diamond tipped tools. The tapered tool holder assembly is available in six separate body sizes to accommodate a wide variety of tool shank diameters beginning at 1/16-inch (1.5 mm) diameter. Each patented tool holder features a precision full length tapered 0 .0 . shank (3.500 inches/ foot on diameter) and I. O. tapered collet seat (10° included) to locate the cutting tool centerline accurately. Positive drive of the tool is achieved by a non-rotating square drive that accepts the tool tang as well as an adjustable preset screw for adjusting tool height. Mounted to the spindle , the collar is rotated in a clockwise direction to mate with the Acme left hand thread on the tool holder body seating the taper into the spindle.
